‘Energy as a Weapon’: the US is driving Cuba to Economic and Social Ruin

Power cuts, fuel shortages, empty shelves: Cuba is in the midst of a dramatic supply crisis. In this interview, political scientist Bert Hoffmann explains why US policy under Trump is drastically exacerbating the situation, what role the Cuban military is playing, and why the country could face a humanitarian disaster in the coming months. Hoffmann warns against a dangerous spiral of escalation: because the US has so far failed to find a way to divide the Cuban leadership along the lines of what happened in Venezuela, the military threat is being ramped up ever further. Initially, limited actions are possible, such as targeted violations of Cuban airspace or territorial waters, as well as attacks on individual infrastructure targets.

Chile’s Food Warning Labels Reduced Sugary Drink Consumption

Chile has the strictest mandatory labelling requirements for unhealthy foods in the world. Advertising aimed at children is also heavily restricted. Following the introduction of these measures, consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks fell significantly and products became healthier. Although obesity remains a major problem, Austria can learn from the Chilean approach. In the EU, labelling is currently only voluntary.

He promises more military force, closer ties with the United States, mega-prisons, and the expansion of oil, gas, and fracking projects. Critics, however, warn of setbacks for human rights, environmental protection, and democratic achievements. Donald Trump’s public endorsement has added further explosiveness to the election.
