In the US state of Maryland, employees at an Apple Store have voted to form a union. At the Towson store, 65 of the 110 employees voted in favour of the union. For years, Apple blocked the efforts of its employees. Now the company’s first union is being established – despite attempts at intimidation. The unions now hope that this will be the impetus for a wave of new formations. A similar wave occurred last year after the creation of the first Starbucks union.

George Floyd is dead. He was murdered because he was black. 46-year-old Floyd was choked by a Minneapolis police officer during an arrest. Black people are three times more likely to be killed by the police than white people. 99% of the killings from 2013 to 2019 have not resulted in officers being charged with a crime. Corona crisis makes the richest even richer: The assets of US billionaires increase by $434 billion during the American lockdown period. The biggest gains were recorded by Jeff Bezos (Amazon), Bill Gates (Microsoft) and Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook). While billionaires gain, 38 million people live below the national poverty line, 28 million people have no health insurance and 39 million are currently unemployed due to the coronavirus.

Cleveland, USA was once a booming industrial city. When many of the local companies moved to low-wage countries, the city’s economy and social fabric collapsed. Mass unemployment and poverty resulted. Twelve years ago, the first cooperatives were founded in one of the poorest areas of the city. They rely on the participation and co-determination of the workers and sustainable economic activity. Together with the city government, the cooperatives developed a regional economic plan and created the economic upswing. This success became known as the “Cleveland Model” and became a model for cities around the world.
